Suicide Prevention & Community Connection

Suicide prevention is a community effort – and everyone has a role to play!

Whether facing struggles, concerns, or just need someone to talk to – 988 is available 24/7 at no cost.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out for yourself, or for someone you know. Call/text 988 or chat online at 988Lifeline.org.  For support in Spanish, call 988 (press 2) or text “Ayuda” to 988.  More options for support are available here – you are not alone, and it does not need to be a crisis for you to reach out.

988 Day is recognized annually on 9/8 – the #988Day theme for 2026 is 988 Reasons: Your reason is reason enough.  It’s a great reminder that we don’t have to be in crisis to reach out to 988.  Whatever you’re facing, your reason for seeking support is reason enough.

Speakers with lived experience navigating mental health challenges have shared their reasons for seeking support at recent Suicide Prevention Month press conferences.  They’ve shared their stories to remind folks that help and hope are always available.  Click on their names to hear from past speakers, including: Abby, Karen, and Christopher.

Each September, Suicide Prevention Month offers a time to raise awareness, spread hope, and spark meaningful action around one of the most urgent mental health issues of our time.  Communities work collectively to ensure that individuals, friends, and families have access to the tools, resources, and support they need to talk openly about suicide prevention, recognize warning signs, and seek help.

These resources can help to advance year-round suicide prevention efforts in your community:

Connect™, a program of NAMI NH, helps organizations and communities plan and implement suicide prevention and postvention strategies and protocols.

Recognize the Warning Signs for Suicide to Save Lives!

If you see warning signs and/or are otherwise worried:

Connect with Your Loved One, Connect Them to Help

  • Ask directly about their suicidal feelings. Talking about suicide is the first step to preventing suicide!
  • Let them know you care.
  • Keep them away from anything that may cause harm.
  • Stay with them and get a professional involved.
  • Offer a message of hope – let them know you will assist them in getting help.
  • Connect them with help:
  • Crisis Text Line – text 741741 from anywhere in the US to text with a trained Crisis Counselor.
  • The Trevor Project –24-hour, toll-free confidential suicide hotline for LGBTQ youth. If you are a young person in crisis, feeling suicidal, or in need of a safe and judgment-free place to talk, call 1-866-488-7386 to connect with a trained counselor.
  • For an emergency, dial 911.

Silence can cost lives, but one caring conversation can save them.  Let’s make silence a thing of the past.
