Magnify Voices Celebration Gives Hope to NH Youth

By Annie Lelio, MA, Behavioral Health Clinician at Granite State Children’s Alliance

When I was invited to attend the Magnify Voices Expressive Arts Contest Celebration at the Currier Museum, I knew it would be an enriching experience, but my expectations were exceeded significantly. Walking into the event was a sensory experience from hearing the uplifting, live music, to seeing a series of booths representing various programs throughout the youth mental health community, to the seemingly endless canvases of expressive art on display throughout the venue. After a long workday, it was exactly what I needed.

As a provider who works with children and families who experience trauma, hope is essential to sustaining the work, though at times can be elusive. The Magnify Voices event was an absolute beacon of hope that left me awestruck by the talent, insight, creativity, and depth exemplified by the youth of New Hampshire. As I walked from canvas to canvas, I was struck by how compelling, heart-wrenching, poignant, and thought-provoking these pieces were. The act of choosing one to cast my vote for the People’s Choice Award felt nearly impossible. I learn from my clients on a daily basis, and they are the “why” behind the work that I do. That being said, I was still rendered speechless by these displays of pure heart, vulnerability, and originality.

I grew up using theatre and music as an expressive outlet, so I know firsthand the value of putting your heart and soul into a piece of art. The catharsis of sharing your feelings, thoughts, and experiences with an audience is one of the most dynamic forms of connection there is. The Magnify Arts contest allowed that connection to take place on an elevated level and in hearing the words of winners, past and present, it was clear the impact was great. As a mental health clinician, you learn quickly how important it is for your client to feel heard, seen, valued and understood. Magnify Voices allowed so many individuals to feel just that and invited the community to share in these experiences as well. We need more of that in this world—for stories of mental health to be shared, celebrated, and valued.  It strengthens relationships, fosters community, builds hope, and saves lives. Thanks to NAMI New Hampshire, NH Children’s System of Care and the Magnify Voices committee for cultivating such a healing and important experience.
