On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, Granite State middle and high school students, along with family and community members, came together at New England College to celebrate the 6th Annual Magnify Voices Expressive Art Contest.
More than 45 students created art to express their experience, or a peer’s experience, with mental illness. The art submissions included songs, paintings, drawings and videos. Artistic expression surrounding serious topics helps to break down barriers and encourage youth to speak up about mental illness and their unique experiences.
Reflections on the Magnify Voices Expressive Art Contest:
Sandra Sanchez, Office of the Child Advocate and Magnify Voices Judge:
“Attending Magnify Voices is about supporting the kids and helping them express themselves through art. Every year I am more and more impressed.”
Jace Troie, NAMI NH DEI & Program Assistant and Magnify Voices Celebration Emcee:
“I’ve heard people say many times that today’s students are our future advocates and leaders, and though I believe that to be true, I want to take a moment to recognize the fact that we all wouldn’t be here tonight if these amazing students were only future advocates and leaders. You all are already standing up and speaking out on matters that are important to you and your communities and the adults here tonight are here to listen, learn and support you.”
Alexa Felixa, Community Mental Health Center Caseworker, NAMI NH Volunteer and Magnify Voices Keynote Speaker:
“Do not forget that you are the future, and your potential to forge change is limitless. Each one of your voices matters, your ideas are influential, and your actions can change the world. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too young to make a difference. Stand up, speak out and believe in yourself. The world needs your passion, creativity and your unwavering determination.”
Mother of 2024 Magnify Voices Winner:
“Her heart map shows all of the little wounds along the way, the big ones, the small ones…also things that helped her heal. The cranes are a symbol of health and living a long, beautiful life.”
Mia Flegal, 2021 Magnify Voices Participant:
“Magnify Voices changed my life. Everyone in this room, who has submitted, should be so incredibly proud of themselves for submitting! Also be so excited for the opportunities that are most likely to come after this. I made so many connections due to Magnify Voices. I met amazing people and after coming to this, I felt so much less alone.”
